DAN & TERRY,

THE PRESONUS FIRE STUDIO MOBILE INTERFACE PROVIDES BOTH THE AUDIO INTERFACE AND USB MIDI INTERFACE FOR THE TRIPLE PLAY & vARRANGER2, SD2, AND MIDI FOOT CONTROLLER, AND THE DIGITECH HARMONIZER. SO I CAN ELIMINATE USING THE ROLAND USB MIDI UM-2G INTERFACE, AND THE NI GUITAR RIG MOBILE I/O AUDIO INTERFACE.

THE 6 PIN FIRE STUDIO MOBILE CONNECTS TO THE MAC THROUGH THE MAC'S 9 PIN 1394 FIRE WIRE PORT, WHICH REQUIRES THE $22.95 6 FOOT SPECIAL CABLE WITH 6PIN ON ONE END AND 9 PIN ON THE OTHER END.

DIGITECH GUITAR IN  TO  FIRE STUDIO MOBILE SEND
THRU GUITAR OUT DIGITECH  TO  FIRE STUDIO RETURN

SD2 MIDI IN  TO  MIDI OUT FIRE STUDIO MOBILE

MIDI PEDAL CONTROLLER USB  TO  MAC USB

TRIPLE PLAY CONTROLLER  TO  MAC USB.

I'VE JUST ORDERED THE PRESONUS, $249.00 - 10%, FREE SHIPPING.

THESE IDEAS ARE FROM SWEETWATER REPS. THEY SAID THAT A POWERED USB HUB IS NOT RECOMMENDED WHEN USING USB AUDIO AND MIDI.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS?

THANKS,

JOHN

Dan

Presonus fire studio mobile should be OK.

You mean because you have not enough usb ports?

Let us know if you feel any difference between the 2 setups.

jbg31792

I have an 8 port USB powered HUB, but was told that for connectivity issues with audio and midi, it would be better to use the Presonus Fire Mobile for the audio interface and for the USB Midi interface. And use the two built in USB ports on the Mac for the Midi Foot Pedal Controller and the Triple Play Dongle, and not to use the USB powered hub at all.

I've just ordered the $49.00 Midi Solutions Quadra Thru with one Midi IN and 4 Midi OUTS. (the Presonus only has 1 midi out and 1 midi in).

Midi OUT Presonus Fire Mobile  to  Midi IN Midi Solutions Quadra THRU, WITH 4 MIDI OUT:

MIDI OUT #1 TO sd2 MIDI IN
MIDI OUT #2 TO DIGITECH MIDI IN.

Sometime next week I should find out about improved connectivity between Triple Play, vArranger2, Midi foot controller, and Digitech harmonizer.

Dan, how would you recommend setting the MIDI up in vArranger 2 for the TRIPLE PLAY, MASTERMIND GT, PRESONUS FIRE MOBILE?

And would the DIGITECH HARMONIZER

Oops:

And would the Digitech Midi go through the vArranger2?

Thanks,

John

Dan

DIGITECH STUDIO VOCALIST LIVE PRO, RACK MOUNT

THE DIGITECH FOLLOWS THE CHORDS OF A MIDI CONTROLLER, MIDI BASS PEDALS, TRIPLE PLAY, ETC, AND PROVIDES VOCAL HARMONY BASED ON THE CHORDS PLAYED.

UP TO NOW I'VE BEEN USING A MOMENTARY FOOT SWITCH PLUGGED INTO THE DIGITECH TO TURN HARMONY EFFECT ON/OFF, AND USE HARMONY ANYTIME.

IT HAS A MIKE XLR INPUT, GUITAR INPUT AND GUITAR THROUGH.

HARMONY CAN BE CONTROLLED BY SETTING SWITCH TO MIDI, AND HARMONY WILL FOLLOW A MIDI FILE, OR SWITCH SETTING TO GUITAR AND A REGULAR GUITAR WILL CONTROL HARMONY VIA THE MIDI OUT FROM MIDI BASS PEDALS TO MIDI IN MIDJAY PLUS.
AND MIDI OUT MIDJAY PLUS TO MIDI IN DIGITECH.

IT HAS CAPABILITY TO FOLLOW CC, I'VE JUST NEVER USED IT LIKE THAT.

THANKS,

JOHN

So in your new proposed set up are you running Varranger off of a thumb drive and if so where are you plugging it into?  The Presonus?

Thanks,

Terry

Maybe the triple play can send the midi guitar notes to 2 differents midi outs?

Hi Terry,
The vArranger2 runs off the partitioned Win7 side on my Mac.   Midi IN SD2  to  Midi OUT Presonus.

Dan,
If the Triple Play could send the guitar midi notes to two different midi outs, what are the two midi outs that you would have in mind?

The Presonus comes with the Universal Control software to I/O routing all of the 10 inputs. Here's what one reviewer said about the universal control.

The Presonus FireStudio Mobile is one of the newer additions to the range of FireWire audio interfaces Presonus currently offer. Running in the same
vein as the FireStudio Project, this unit offers 10 inputs, 6 outputs and 24-bit / 96KHz recording quality, but with a drastically smaller footprint when compared to its bigger brother. It also sports two of Presonus's acclaimed XMAX class-A preamplifiers, both offering true 48 volt phantom power to your microphone of choice, and serving as fantastic instrument level inputs.
Amazingly, this unit does have 10 inputs, which is very special considering the units size and means that the FireStudio Mobile has far more potential applications than most audio interfaces of this form, and although setting up the I/O to make use of the full 10 inputs can be tricky, the approach is made very easy by the software included with the unit. Presonus use a system called Universal Control, which is a refreshingly familiar "Mixer-Style" interface and allows you to very easily set up your I/O, and even set up a separate headphone mix from the master monitor signal – a very handy addition indeed.
So, we have these two XMAX pre's on the front, and around the back are six balanced line-level jack inputs, that are for channels 3-8 as well as an included breakout cable that gives you additional S/PDIF and MIDI I/O connections. Another interesting addition to this unit is the second FireWire port – this enables you to daisy-chain with other Presonus interfaces and equipment.
Assessing the build quality before we actually use it, the FireStudio Mobile is made from sturdy metal and the level controls are also machined from a very appealing blue metal too. It's built like a tank, feels very solid and very road worthy, and like it can take a knock or two too.

Dan

No, I think to split the guitar midi outs. One for vArranger and one for his digitech harmoniser.
By the way, there is many way of plugging everything. The best is to try it, and see if it is working good.

So can I move my Varranger program off the thumb drive and onto the hard drive of my computer?  I thought I had to run it off the thumb drive?  Sometimes all this stuff makes me feel dumb :)

On the set up here is what I am thinking in regard to running things.

1. I have the Triple Play on the guitar and going through the USB reciever driving Varranger on the primary input.

2. From the guitar I plan on running out the normal audio cable into my TC Helicon then into my sound system.  The chords from my guitar will set the voices on the TC Helicon.

3. I will run my vocal through the TC Helicon as well allowing for vocal processing and the ability to punch in vocals when I need.

4. On the second Midi in I will run the M-Audio Uno which goes from USB to Midi to run the MIDI Buddy which will control the Intro's, 4 Style variations and Endings, and whatever else I finally decide to control on Varranger.

5. The first output on the Varranger will be set the Ketron SD4.

I think this is basically the same set-up you are trying to achieve with the exceptino you are using the Presonus Fire for your midi output.  Of course if I want to run other soft synths or things this set up might be limiting.  That might be where the Presonus would come in handy.

Thanks,

Terry
