Hi Dan, it would be helpful for those like me who also use a PC keyboard to have the key reference in the lower-right corner of each vA2 key. I've attached an example.

I have a vArranger license since 2017, the only flaw is the poor updating. Dan (or whoever) does not seem to have any more desire to integrate new features, the project seems to have run aground now (not to say abandoned).

I would like to add my experience on the subject: in 2017 I became a user of vA2 version 1.17 (now 1.20) to use it with Ketron SD1000. It was and still is the best arranger simulator for Windows. It does not suffer from bugs during play, allows compatibility of various formats, gives its best with the compatibility of even recent Yamaha styles and its proprietary Synth Software supported by sound banks derived from Genos. The only flaw that has remained from 2017 to today is the poor version update, with perhaps new features and new compatibility with new styles formats. For example, "Half-fills" or "Only drums fills" could be implemented like the Yamaha. For the rest, the software is excellent and also allows professional use.

Hi Dan, no more upgrade of vA2 soon???
There would be a lot of things that could be implemented such as:

• HALF-FILLS
• SMOOTH FILLS (as YAMAHA make)
• a RESET-TEMPO button
• better management of all CC# and SYSEX events
• compatibility with newest keyboards

 

freakman, the CASM is correct like this, it must not be modified. Dan just needs to lock the notes to the PHR1 chord change. I can't be clearer than that.

Freak Man, do you know about programming styles in general? Yamaha style programming? Do you know Yamaha CASM metadata? Dan will have understood what I mean. For those interested, there is an excellent PDF course Style Creation Course made by guru Jørgen Sørensen.

You should listen to the PHS1 (accordion) track in MAIN 2 when in the first measure you go from a major to a minor (or seventh) chord, the notes played in major remain in the background.

Hi Dan, I don't know if it's a mistake, but for this style in the MAIN B riff, the PHASE1 track on first measure, going from a Maj to other 7th chord the CASM track "Maj7" notes continue to play instead of stopping.  

Is a new update coming? What timescales are there? I can't wait..

Professional MIDI expanders recognize CC#121 to reset all CCs sent in the MIDI channel, vArranger may send this on every style change in case an NRPN/RPN was sent during playback of the previous style.

As for CCs NOT vArranger should handle them as style programmers enjoy modifying cutoff/resonance/pitch/pan/reverb-chorus send for each drum sound note. You may want to look at the specifications in the various YAMAHA/ROLAND PDF manuals to learn more.

As for the fills, I explained myself poorly. You could take a look at the many videos on YouTube about Yamaha keyboard styles, for example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWImlU8D8io. At each fills call, the bass/acc1-5 tracks continue to play the riff of the current variation, while the drums tracks play those of the fills. In this case the fills would play without sudden interruptions, "smooth". I hope it was clear.

I checked better, you're right, I'm changing my styles so as not to send a sysex reset to the device so as not to lose the "previous" controls. I still ask you why vArranger doesn't send CC99/98 NPRNs? At this point, there remains a request I made in the past regarding having Yamaha-style "smooth" fills (only fills on the drum tracks after the first beat)

I think it is better to send all messages contained in one style rather than "optimize" them according to unknown principles. I've been using arrangers and programming them for 30 years and I think I can say I understand something about them. You can do the test yourself by selecting a style with CC91 on the BASS track at zero, then close and reopen vArranger, you will notice that the CC91 is not sent.

I'll send you the style in the evening, I'm at work now. The default YAMAHA styles have the XG Reset sysex at the beginning, when you change styles with the player stopped it is sent, consequently the external XG device initializes and sets CC91=40 for each track. I believe that at this point in a future release you should consider adding a "DO NOT OPTIMIZE MIDI FLOW" flag (or mode) to avoid not sending all MIDI messages correctly (as I proposed in the past) . 

This happens when the style is selected, during playing the CC91=0 is correctly sent if the track changes.

I don't understand why vArranger doesn't send CC#91=0s in XG mode, but CC#93s do. It is essential for example for BASS tracks where they usually do not have a reverb send. I think this is a serious mistake..

I would like to add that currently vArranger is the best windows arranger software on the market. Reads various styles formats of various brands Roland, Yamaha, Solton, Ketron, etc., compatibility with various modules/keyboards, easily configurable and in continuous development. I hope that Dan follows up on my private messages about improvement suggestions to implement (and that I haven't annoyed him. ).

After having had the opportunity to try the V3 Sound Sonority XXL and MB Music PRO.DX expander modules, I believe that this module wins the gold medal by secondment (just to be on the Olympics theme). Without taking anything away from the other two mentioned above, but I think the overall sound quality is decidedly better, it fully supports the GS/GM format (vA2 set in GS mode), I don't know about the GM2, I would have to do some tests on it. It's basically a Roland clone expander with lots of interesting sounds. Too bad there aren't many demo videos around.

Unfortunately, there is currently no software to create Ketron styles in a more detailed and simple way as for Yamaha.  For example the excellent StyleMagic YA that I use.  The only one capable of creating Ketron styles is the old Styleworks, but it has been the subject of discussions in the past on this forum as it doesn't offer good customization.

I would like to ask you a request if possible: while an INTRO/ENDING riff is playing and you press a VARS while AUTO-FILL is set, it would be good for vArranger play the related fill during the transition (possibly only DRUMS track) before starts with VAR riff in the next measure.

Hi Dan, you were right, I tried vArranger with a "Chinese" USB MIDI and it doesn't lose data on transmission.. probably for the ALESIS there is a buffering problem.. I just bought a "bespeco" interface which is similar, let's hope so. I wanted to ask you this fact: I am creating my personalized styles using the Yamaha *.sty format (as a former PSR-SX900 owner I found it excellent for parameterization), using my KETRON SD1000 with this configuration on vArranger. I would like to use the "PERC" channel with the DRUMS bank, how should I set the CC0 and CC32 to recognize the DRUMS bank rather than SOUNDS? A thousand thanks.

There is still an unresolved problem from older versions, namely MIDI-OUT latency when using a USB-MIDI IN/OUT adapter. Often not all messages are captured by the expander (e.g. the KETRON SD1000) and causes failure to change the PC and/or incorrect CC values between style changes. Regardless of the type of style (roland, yamaha, ketron..), it would be useful to have a function that (at the user's choice) would play the fills like yamaha ones, that is, after the first bar ticks of the fill only the fill drum tracks riff would play (continuing to play the riff of bass/acc1-2-3 in the current variation), before the first bar the complete riff rtacks. I do not know if I was clear.

I've modified the patches with OMB and now style sounds right without "optimization".. it would be useful if vA2 also had the possibility of having a micro editing form for editing MIDI events without losing the CASM ..

..in the meantime .. I meant, if there is a portion of code in vArranger for which a style is loaded eg. Yamaha set a "sound that sounds better (optimized for the SD1000)", I would like you to implement a check that bypass this for procedure ..

A mine mapping at the moment I can't give it to you because I should listen to hundreds of voices and look for the "best" one from Yamaha and SD1000, it would be useful as requested at the beginning, a form to customize this "optimization" of voices ..

I purposely bought a tablet just to avoid using nanokontrol2..Anyway, the program change checkbox would be more urgent .. let me know if it's possible and how long you can develop it ..

Another feature will be the possibility of mute/unmute a channel simply quickly tapping (for touchscreen) or quickly click on these..I'm using a windows tablet with 10.1" screen, and MUTE/SOLO buttons are very small and very hard to use..

Temporarily, you could add a checkbox in setup form where you ask the user to optimize programs changes..it would be useful when I import styles yamaha with program changes mapped already for SD1000 ..

When i'm playing in SD1000 configuration and then load a other file format style (eg. yamaha), vA2 "optimize" some program voices for SD1000 module..Is it possible to "edit" this mapping to make a user's choice of program voices to optimize?

I long ago asked for the possibility of exporting and re-importing loaded styles with a yamaha-like structure (midi + CASM), to be able to modify them with an external sequencer .. of course I could have paid a little something to have it ..

Io sono più per l'hardware, ovvero comprare la KETRON SD1000 invece dei banchi suoni..

Look at the attached image .. I would have thought about this feature:

If I selected one of the tracks in box 1, the CC71-72-73-74 will work only for selected track.
If I have selected one of the three sections in the box 2,

• if it is "STYLE" ONLY the Cutoff/Resonance (71 and 74) can act (it does not make sense Attack/Release of all style)
• if "LEFT"/"RIGHT" then all four CCs can act.

I haven't try this yet because i'm to work..assuming it works, would it be possible to apply these controls to the left side and for each style track??

Hi Dan, my keyboard can transmit the CC71-74, but vArranger seems to filter them, even though my SD1000 can read them. How can I "unlock" them? Is there a particular setup to made?

Dan, in fact modules compatible only with the GM format do not support multiple "Drums" type tracks . GS/XG formats via SysEx messages enable multiple "Drums" tracks. It would be advisable to make vA2 in "GM" mode join the events of tracks 9 and 10 in channel 10. I think that's what Freakman asks.

Replicating the sounds of a VSTi in a soundfont for those with competence is not complicated at all. I also created a soundfond with the sounds of my old GEM WX2 with a good result. The difference is the DSP Effects of a VSTi, which transforms completely a poor guitar sound in a powerful Stratocaster..For this I asked Dan to develop support for this module VSTi..

PS the Sound Canvas VA costs 115 euros .. for those interested ..

I've collected a lot of Soundfonts, Roland surrogated too. But, if we want to speak "PRO", a professional VSTi as Virtual Sound Canvas is better..

Other 2 Roland styles to examinate BASS track..

Cmaj,C#maj,Dmaj,D#maj,Amaj,A#maj,Bmaj bass plays note in one octave (wrong), Emaj,Fmaj,F#maj,Gmaj,G#maj bass plays octave up and down (right)..

So, this is a significant bug..

GEM WK2..generally GEM skips CC32, but i think that at some transmission speed cause a "no" sound change ..

..but my GEM supports the Roland GS Sysex .. in fact imposed GS mode of vA2 .. 

Hi Dan, I'm using an old GEM keyboard as an expander with Roland styles, connecting it to vA2 with a USB-MIDI adapter cable. I'm noticing that in the presence of CC32 (bank select LSB) messages, the keyboard can not change the sounds. Is it an event timing problem? Probably the internal clock of the keyboard is slow in "reading" MIDI events compared to the computer's USB transmission. Is it possible to add a check to filter them from vA2? Or increase data transmission delay?

A small step forward (and simpler, I guess) for style creator would be that vA2 might have a proprietary style format, perhaps a MIDI file type (such as Yamaha's styles) with all its volume, sounds params, rev, and cho editable parameters which through a Cubase-type software, users can edit and customize styles (Ketron, Roland etc ..) loaded in memory.. I hope Dan gives us an answer about it ..

I agree .. that post was created long ago, and there was no response from Dan .. so it's a born thing and dead in a short time, a symptom that will be difficult to accomplish .. sadly, Ketron than other music hardware manufacturers did not issue DEMO MIDI files to test the controls and sysex supported by the device .. a real shame ..

Dan, I can't find the Roland style to be examined now, try this style downloaded from the Ketron Style Download section by this forum. Look at the BASS line .. I hope you can find the bug at last .. Or fix this problem finally..

Dan, i'm trying to play some Roland style, and also for this style format there's a "octave note limits playing" for riffs as INTROS and ENDINGS..
Please, remove this useless "note limit" in vA2 for all styles format except for Yamaha styles format (that support it).

I would like to report this problem also (with DSP-FX of SD1000). When I step from a style with an ACC FX sound to FX without sound, the SD1000 does not reset the DSP-FX in the ACC track. Try this style..

SD1000 uses SAM3816 CPU..

I forgot to add, by the very least, the cost of the computer, that is, a second-hand LINQ tablet with Windows 10 found on eBay at about 75 Euros (perfect, a real deal). With this I compensated for the possibility of using vA2 with the touch and not with a KORG nanoKontrol2 .. so we get close to 1000 Euros.

Style Works XT is not obsolete at all and difficult to use, obviously it has a "base" knowledge of how styles work and how it is programmed, but I find the Import-Export style to MIDI FILE functions very useful , and thanks to XGWorks I can edit and optimize the riffs, especially when converting MIDI FILE to STYLE to a MIDI FILE song in style. Also Style Works is a project born around 1997-1998, so work and bugfix were made with respect to vA2 at the moment..

I say mine:

I personally solved the "style creator" issue by purchasing the good EMC Style Works XT Universal by taking advantage of the Christmas offer at 250 Euros. So if we do 2 calculations: vA2 = 349 Euro, Style Works = 250 Euro, KETRON SD1000 = 379 Euro (bought because i was surprised by Dan's DEMO videos), TOTAL = 978 Euros. If we consider that the Roland BK5, the KETRON Midijay Plus (with a few extra euros) has ALL INCLUDED, without bugs, customizable and with "style creator", it gets me some nervous .. i am confident in Dan to be able to have AT LEAST a more functional and versatile product of this .. even without creator, but STYLE EDITABLE (easier to realize). The only time Dan responded quickly and corrected vA2 was when I noticed an incorrect chords recognition, which of course for Auto-Accompaniment software is not a "little bug".
I thinks, at ends, that Dan is probably working alone, and maybe he does not live with only vA2 retributions, so he should start looking for collaborators, or possibly selling the vA2 project to a large company with a number of staff to carry out the project in a short time..more, I repeat, for the moment I " turn the bales "..

Roland has historically been not a recognized music company for irresistible sounds, but (at least in Italy) their keyboards is very much used in live-set as pianobar (used with midifile and styles). Obviously, Roland has no interest in making the SC-VA playing sounds perfectily for only 115 euros, otherwise it would not sell hardware such as synth keyboard, arranger and sound modules. Know, meanwhile, that the SC-VA will have more and more interesting features than the synth of vA2, which in turn is a surrogate. Making vA2 more compatible with SC-VA at least as far as patch sounds would not be a bad idea..An example, if i play an original Roland style as BK-7m styles, there's a lot o sounds in sounds bank as 53 (CC0) wich SC-VA don't understand. With all the respect for vArranger's soundbanks, but in comparison to a PROFESSIONAL product like Sound Canvas VA, the comparison does not even do it.

Well, it would be interesting if vArranger offered better support (full sounds patch list) for this module, so vArranger is already compatible with Roland's styles. What do you think about, Dan?

New vA2 version haven't many new functions..

vA2 is compatible with many styles formats, but each format, in addition to the note types messages, has parameter messages such as Volume, Pan, Reverb.Chorus, Tune, Pitch Bend Sensivity, Master Level / Reverb / Chorus / Delay. and more "keyboards internal" setups. Since vA2 can not read all of thems, so here is my proposal for Dan:

It would be interesting if vA2 could save (perhaps in proprietary format vA2) along with the style, even the extra parameters set by the user, so that whenever the style is invoked, the levels, effects, and volume of the LEFT/RIGHTS tracks are automatically set..

A little aswer, if it's possible now..

Playing the same "LEI.PAT" styles, try to play INTRO and ENDING patterns..try to play firstly with a "C" tone, than with a "G" tone. the highest notes of ACC tracks are trasposing to a lower octave, probably because there's an "upper limit note range" parameters in the style (as Yamaha style).
Now, probably you will answer me "Why don't you use yamaha style format?" ( )
So, i'll make you a better question : Can you remove this "useless limit note range" (maybe add a check if the user will use this feature) or will the use can edit the style directly (more useful).

I've listened more than this style (styles included in the zip of vArranger also) and there's the same problem..I think that isn't a style format problem..Can you check the algorithm of chords translator?

Hi Dan, I attach a style to try. You could check how vArranger plays "sus4" and "7th_sus4" for the ACC tracks? Especially try to play Esus4, Fsus4, F#sus4, Gsus4, G#sus4, vArranger sounds really bad.

In practice, you should be able to choose whether to use the classic Fill1, Fill2, Fill3, Break or 3 Fills keys with arrows →, ← and ↓. Regardless of the number of variations in style, if I press "FILL→", vArranger will play the next FILL phrase and then at end of it playing next variation and so on. A last variation (es. VAR4), if i press "FILL→", vArranger will play the first FILL phrase and next play first variation riff (as VAR1), vice versa, if i press "FILL←" at first variation, vArranger will play last FILL and then play last variation. A little request: If I create a style KETRON with only 2 variations and 2 fills, can i make sure that when VAR 1 is played and FILL 2 is pressed (with the "AUTO" key active), vArranger after playing FILL 2 positions on VAR 2? The same applies if SOUND VAR 2 and pressing FILL 1, vArranger sounds FILL 1 and then VAR 1. It would be great if you would give the user the choice of how the FILLS should behave .. I hope not to bother you..

Now work..there's another question, if it's possible to realize..When vArranger does not find any notes in a riff can it hide the relative key? For example, if I only create 2 fills, the other 2 (type FILL3 and BREAK) remain visible but have no notes in their parts.

Hi Dan, there's another style problem..At the ARR2 and ARR3 tracks, when i play FILL1-2-3-BREAK riffs, vArranger automatically sets "GRAND PIANO" sound, but there isn't any program change messages in track..Please check it..

But creating Yamaha style is a bit expensive than Ketron styles..

I've buyed a SD1000..playng Ketron styles is more indicated for this module..

I've converted this style to Yamaha format, i've used a external program to handle style format (CASM editor), then i've reconverted it to Ketron. Now vArranger play "Muted Guitar" track well. So it's a pity make all this steps, it will be better edit the Ketron styles directly from vArranger...

In fact it is not a vArranger problem, MIDI messages are generated from my arranger keyboard. I also have a keyboard controller and does not generate these messages. I just wonder if it can be implemented, unhurried course.

I'm using my old arranger keyboard by connecting it to vArranger with a MIDI-USB interface in the IN port, and the SD1000 in the OUT port. The keyboard transmits MIDI "Active Sensing" messages causing an incorrect type sending MIDI NOTE ON / OFF message, pitch well and everything else. So i'm forced to use MIDI-OX to filter these messages and send them back to vArranger clean. It's can possible to filter them directly from vArranger? Can you add a general MIDI message filter on vArranger?

I used always vArranger2 with my notebook and up to here no problem.
Days ago I bought a tablet with Windows 10 installed to take advantage of the touch screen, unfortunately, when I change the style or sounds vArranger  freezes for a few minutes and then work again (although it continues to play). Is it a USB stick problem? Does anyone know how to fix? I've a Kingston 8Gb exFAT formatted. FAT32 freeze too..

I've Style Works too,  and i've send them an e-mail report about this..I've created this style with StyleWorks and i'm sure that CC11 in DRUMS track are inserted in MIDI-FILE (to import) structure..

Save all, I do not know if it's a bug of vArranger (I hope not;)) but I created a style (which I enclose) with Style Works XT Pro, the riff ENDING 3 I plugged the type CC7 messages (Volume) to create a fade out but vArranger recognize them as CC93.

I've Ketron SD2 soundfont, then when i switch from a GS/GM mode to Ketron SD2 mode, vA2 don't send the midi bank select (CC0) to channels as on PERC channel. It's a bug?

I've imported 2 INS file, than i've selected Misc but VA2 see the BK-m7 sounds list!! 

It would be useful to have the possibility to manage the imported voices from files * .INS directly in the SOUNDS section to the right of the screen for a immediate recall of the same.

In Italy the GEM keyboards has been widely used in the piano bar, the series WS/WX and WK2/3/4/8/GENESYS is very equipped with styles programmed by professional musicians experts. I believe there would be a good reception in this regard if it were implemented compatibility.
