Title: Best Soundfont for GM Midis
Post by: Donny on January 06, 2015, 07:52:58 AM
Hello to all,

i read the note from Dan in the forum......

.........just copy your soundfont files (.sf2) in the folder I told you, the run vArranger.
vArranger will load all the SF2 files in memory.
Every sounds of your soundfonts that have the same Bank/program change that the vArranger synth will replace its sounds.

First i am searching for the best GM Soundfont.
So i copied all the GM SF2 into the right folder. That workes.

All Instruments are there in the list.

Is it possible to say that i use for my midi file only GM Soundfont 1 ?
Choose GM Soundfont 2, GM Soundfont 3 and compare so the best GM Soundfont.

When a Midi File is loaded what SF2 is used for that ?

For accompaniment and Midi files is the same soundfont used?

....sorry for the questions, but i haven't found this in the forum.......

Many greetings,

Roland

The soundfonts SF2 files has one or many PRESET inside, defined (and selected) with a BANK number and Program Change number.

It's better to use a SF2 editor, to listen to them, and define their bank / program number like :

http://polyphone.fr/
http://www.synthfont.com/VienaSetup.exe

If 2 sounds, in 2 files, has  the same bank and program number, only the last one will be loaded (sorted by file alphabetical order)

Once your bank is ready, you can use it inside vArranger

The same bank will be used for midfiles and styles

I did my own selection
= the best sounding voices for my ear
(only the 128 GM sounds)
from 14 sf2 banks compiled into one file.

I can't to publishthe soundfont file,
because it contain sounds from commercial banks, too.
However, here is the excell table with my selection.
Maybe it could be helpfull for somebody.

I've tried a midi song with soundfonts and one vsti.
The Soundfonts are SD2 and the vsti is Purity.
For only playing without modify the sound is not bad for me........
