I have used Dan's vArranger for nearly 10 years now.  I have always used the Ketron SD sound modules.  The SD1000 is an awesome addition to vArranger.

Dan,
I hope you are doing ok and have to gotten sick.  I have talked to some people who are interested in buying vArranger and they said you have not answered their emails.  I hope all it ok with you because that is not like you at all.

I spoke to a friend today and he would like to hear from you.  Check your emails for his questions.

Hey Henry121,
The gig set for Genos you shared I created 2 years ago.  Would be nice if you
mentioned that.

Bachus,
I totally agree with your post.  If I were Dan I would pass this guy by.  All he will do is gripe and complain.

Dan,
I hope you know how much all of us appreciate you and the on-going support you have provided for years without charging for what you do.

Dan,
When loading vArranger I noticed a reverb file being loaded.  I have been getting an extreme level of
reverb and can't seem to get rid of it.  What am I missing?

Thank you Dan, I understand now how it works

Hi Dan,
I am making a lot of progress setting up songs for my live gigs using vArranger.  I have one problem I have not yet solved.  I have about 12 favorite voices I want to save and have them always appear when I start vArranger.  So far each time I drag these sounds to the lower bar and do a save they do not appear again if I close vArrager and restart it.  What must I do to have these show up each time I start vArranger?

Got it and it downloaded ok. Runs perfectly.  I don't know what I did to delete it. I now have it all backed up.

Thanks Dan, appreciate what you do for us.

Thanks Dan, that helped a lot.  I have another problem but I will contact you Wednesday earlier in the day.
I accidentally deleted the vArranger .exe file.  Looked everywhere for it but it is gone.  I'll be in touch Wednesday.  Also, things are coming together really great.  So far I am finding that the Yamaha Tyros 4 styles play best with vArranger and no Ketron SD2 Module.

Thanks for everything,

Dan,
How do I remove the PDF leadsheet from a song I attached it to.

Deane
#15
Hi Dan, I think I have the answer to all of this.  I have been auditioning styles from all kinds of keyboards.
The problem is not within vArranger but within certain styles.  Today I went through about 600 styles all from different keyboards. There were styles from each keyboard that had enough volume that I would lower the master on vArranger.  There were also styles from each keyboard that had very little volume.  As you know styles from some keyboards are not suited for vArranger.  I posted a question about which styles played best with vArranger but got very little feed back.  Anyway,  when I am finished I will have a lot of deleted styles and many that suit vArranger very well.  Remember, I am not using the Ketron SD2 module.  I'll keep you posted.

Deane
#16
Dan,
If you are asking me the issue is that using the Synth and not the Ketron SD2 Module with a headset the sound volume is very low even with the laptop and vArranger level set to 100%..

Deane
#17
I use three different headsets. Two are Sonys and one is a Sure with ear plugs.  I tried all three with same result.  This has just happened with the most current version of vArranger.  With all my other versions the same headsets worked normally.

Deane
#18
Yes. Both at max.  Same headset I use with other
Keybaords with no problems.
Deane
#19
Yes, do have the computer volumn set to 100%

Deane
#20
I have been using vArrranger without my Ketron SD2 Module and have played styles from all sorts of keyboards.  I too have noticed a low level volume with my headset.  I have even restarted my computer to make sure that was not the cause.

What I am trying to work out is to get the voices when using the Synth to sound proper.  So far I have to been able to do that.  That is why I asked if a newer laptop with the best hardware would help.

Deane
#21
Dan,
I still am using the same laptop I have had for over 5 years.  It works just fine but I often wondered if
I had the most up to date hardware if the synth sounds would be a bit better.  So, if you could buy the very best laptop for vArranger what would it be?  I did buy a new computer and returned it because it did not fold back and it was also extremely heavy.

Deane
#22
You are right - Audya styles will to play well.  Even on my SD7 and SD40 they did not convert to the .KST format and those Audya styles converted by others just were not very good.   The .PAT format styles I am auditioning now come from Synthzone, this site, and from Ketron.

Also, yesterday I got everything playing with and without the SD2 module.  Very neat.

Deane
#23
Right now I am auditioning over 600 Ketron styles in the original .PAT format.  I use a Ketron SD40 and have owned a Ketron SD7 so I have a bit of experience with how they should sound.  I have more Yamaha styles then anyone needs and will work on them next.  What I am doing now with vArranger is eliminating all the styles I would never use or that do not sound good.  I use a Bose L1 Pro speaker with all my gig setups so the sound should be good.

Deane
#24
Thanks Dan for the quick reply.  I'll check it out Tuesday.  On my all the keyboards I owned you could decide If a chord change was right away or on the next measure.

Deane
#25
I think I found the problem.  Sometimes a chord change does not happen til the 1st beat of the next measure - sometimes it happens right away.  Is there a setting I have missed?  I need the chords to change as I play them.

Deane
#26
Thanks. Will keep at it.
Deane
#27
Dan,
Today I got started re-voicing my song list.  I am using a headset and only your synth.  No Ketron SD2.
I might have discovered a flaw.  It seems minor chords played from the 2nd position do not play properly.  I have tried several to make sure and that seems to be the case.

One other question.  If I want to use the Ketron SD2 module how do I get back to it working again.  For some reason all I am able to get is the synth setup to work.

Deane
#28
Tonight Dan upgraded my vArranger and I have a very neat full working setup without using the
Ketron SD2 module.  Monday I will play with it and get back to this thread to report how things sound.
I did not get the Genos sound pack.

Deane
#29
Wow! What an awesome guy Dan is.  Today he spent two and a half hours supplying me with the most current version of vArranger.  Turned out my network was having a problem.  Once I got my end working it took Dan about 10 minutes to do the upgrade and check out other setting on my laptop.

For those of you who are new to vArranger, Dan once did all this without charging for it.

But back to Dan - Thanks Dan for everything you have always done for us.

It tells me the synyh was installed.
Deane

The Synth had been installed. Still no Audio Output screen.
I have noticed sometimes it installs automatically and sometimes I have to click on
it to install it.

Deane

Here it is.  As you can see, there is no Audio option shown.
Deane

Deane
#37
Yes, I see the audio out list but WASAPI is not in it.
Also, my normal setup is my Roland A-800 pro controller, my SD2 module, and I use either a Bose speaker or a headset.  I unplug the SD2 module and connect the computer outlet to a speaker or my headset.  I start the synth before starting vArranger.  It has worked a few days ago and I don't know why it does not work now.  I have made no changes to the OS or other apps on the computer.

Deane
#38
Windows 10 - came on computer and updated as Microsoft did updates.

Deane

That is my question.  Why is it not in the audio out window?  I restarted vArranger several times but it never show up.  I had the Ketron SD2 module unplugged and a headset plugged into the laptop output.

The vArranger² Software Forum / For Dan - WASAPI
April 12, 2020, 02:44:11 PM
Dan,
how do I get WASAPI to appear in the midi selection screen.  I am using version 1.19 but without the last two years updates.  There is to much latency without the SD2 module and no WASAPI.

Thanks,

#41
Dan,
Since I bought your vArranger, nearly 10 years ago,  I have always used the Ketron SD2 module with wonderful sound quality results. I tried using vArranger without the SD2 but really was not very pleased with the sound.  So, what must I do to get the best sound quality from vArranger without using the SD2 module.  My main concern is I do not play the modern music.  All my gigs are for people 65 years old and older.  I play all the popular hits from the 1920's to the 1970's.  So I need a sound source that can support that style of music.  I have never used a DAW and really don't know much about them.  By the way, I did not keep the new super computer I bought last month so I am still using my ASUS 15 inch touchscreen laptop. It has always worked great with vArranger.

Thanks,
Deane
#42
Thanks Dan, this helped me better understand how it works.
You are awesome!  I have always been happy to tell others about the
quality of your support for your users.

Deane
#43
Wow! so does that mean I have to save all 4000 Plus of my songs to make this work?  So what is the purpose of the "Startup Configuration" save option?

Deane
#44
What if you want those 20 voices to be a "global" setting.  Is that possible?  I did save it as a "Startup Configuration".

Deane
#45
Dan,
I created about a dozen user voices and placed them on the bottom line below the 4 voices I prefer for songs.  I saved the setup as a "Startup Configuration" but upon restarting vArranger the 12 voices were not available on the main screen.  What did I do wrong?  I hope I described this clear enough.

The vArranger² Software Forum / COVID-19
April 03, 2020, 04:28:00 PM
No one has talked about how things are going for them.  Dan, I have been thinking about you and hope you and your family are getting along ok and are healthy.  My wife and I are ok and doing fine.  Finding a lot of new tasks to pass the time and discovering that all these fancy things we were doing are not really necessary to be happy.  All my music gigs have been cancelled and will probably not come back until August or September if then.  My wife has renewed her awesome cooking ability and we have been eating some wonderful home cooked meals.  I spend time on my three keyboard setups each day but frankly am losing interest - but I do enjoy the time I spend with it.  Anyway,  I hope all is going well for our forum members and wish everyone the best.

Deane

I have to agree with BJGuy on this.  I too have had vArranger for nearly a decade and I have without hesitation or doubt praised the outstanding support Dan has provided us for all these years.  I have been online with Dan probably 4 or 5 times so he could get my vArranger updated or helping me learn how to use it years ago.  Wow!  How many companies do that for free!.  Dan is right about the thumb drive - it works on any computer and that is a convince.  My post was really about taking extra stuff along for gigs.  I am always fearful of losing it.  Anyway, I have to give Dan my full support just like he has supported me.

Deane
#48
Dan,
I had a question about this too.  I am still using the thumb drive you activated nearly 6 years ago.  I only plug it in when I run vArranger and have never had a problem with it.  However, once before you provided a version of vArranger with a key that I used on my laptop.  After I changed laptops I could no longer use that version of vArranger without the thumb drive.  I play gigs all the time and I would like to not have to keep up with a single thumb drive on gigs.  It would be much better to use vArranger without the thumb drive on gigs.  FYI - when I changed laptops I did clean it off completely before selling it.

Tomo49,
Can you restate your questions?  I am not sure what you are asking.

Deane

Good subject.  I am still using an older ASUS touch screen laptop that has 3 USB ports, a SD Card Reader, and even a CD drive.  I actually bought a new HP touchscreen laptop with all of the above but returned it because it did not fold back.   What I found out is it is almost impossible to find a good laptop with more than 1 USB port these days.   The usb hubs should work fine though with vArranger.

Deane
#52
Wow, 62 view and no-one has an opinion about the various style conversions that do not play well on
vArranger!   I thought there would be more interest.

Deane
#53
I was wondering - if you use vArranger with the SD2 what styles have worked best for you. For example,
do you use Ketron's .PAT formatted styles?  If you use conversions from all the other keyboards - which ones work best for you?   Like may keyboard players, I have thousands of styles from just about every known arranger keyboard and I have found a lot of them simply do not play well with vArranger.  It would be nice to have a lot of the forum members join in here and tell us what you have discovered.

Oh yes, what version of vArranger are. you using? I am using 1.19.

Thanks Dan - it works perfectly.

I bought a new computer and am working with your vArranger and when I double click the synth file it self deletes.  Have you seem this happen before?

Deane

I want to add to this.  I have owned vArranger for over 6 years and Dan has been awesome in responding to questions and providing help when needed.  I know of no other company that even comes close to the level of service Dan provides.

Deane
#60
Mark,
Hang in there.  Dan is a very reputable guy and the support he provides for all of us is outstanding.  It is not uncommon to get answers to questions from him the same day you post them.

Mark, I use the Ketron SD2 sound module with vArranger and it is pretty  darn neat.  Some folks use the Ketron SD1000.  What are your plans?

Deane
#61
I have enough buttons programmed that it includes 4 buttons for each variation, 4 buttons for endings, stop button, start button, next song button, previous song button,  plus volume controls for RH sound and master sound using sliders.

There are others.  The programming is done with Dan's vArranger setup.  I did not have to know anything about programming the controls.

Deane
#62
Borys54,

When I use the Roland A-800 Pro with vArranger I NEVER have to touch my computer screen.  All the controls I need are available on the Roland A-800Pro controller just like using a normal arranger keyboard.

Here is a link to a video. Notice I did not have to use the screen to change variations or select an ending.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wNrUsQRQPI
The M-Audio has no such controls available.

Deane
#63
I use 2 controllers.  One is a M-Audio Keystation 49 key and one is a Roland A-800 Pro61 key.

The Roland shines over the M-Audio in many ways.

Deane

A day ago I sent Dan a private message informing him about an issue I have been having with vArranger for the past several years.  I almost have stopped using vArranger because of this issue.  Well, Today I get a replay to run the support.exe program and Dan connected with my laptop and walked me through several ways to improve what I have been doing.  He spent about 45 minutes with me and totally explained to me how to do a few simple things that will make the styles and sounds better suited for the music I play.

I have been a vArranger owner for nearly 5 years and have gigged with it many times.  With Dan's gracious and informative help it looks like I will be able to continue to use vArranger for some special gigs I play each year.

Thanks Dan - you are the best!!

Thank you everyone for your thanks.  What I have provided is the result of nearly 30 years of collecting.  At first we had all those bulky fakebooks - then computers came along and it was easy to convert the songs to PDF format and display on a computer.  Wow! - no more bulky fakebooks for gigs.   Over the years I converted dozens of fakebooks - and sold them at garage sales.  So now all my collection is in PDF format.  I hope they add something to your setups and gig experience.

This has turned into a very interesting thread.  What seems to be happening is different people are using vArranger in different ways and what really is great for some is not so great for others.  Don't know what you do about that.   From my perspective I use vArranger exactly like I would use my Korg PA4X or my Tyros 4  as an arranger - using right hand sounds for melody and left hand for chords only.   So what is important to me are those features you would find on any Top of the line arranger keyboard.   I have not interest in VSTs or "modern" sounding sounds.  What I have noticed after one of Dan's upgrades is a what I would call a severe amount of reverb on just about all the sounds.  I have tried to turn it down but that has not helped much.  I tried using Dan's new sounds - in fact I was the very first one to buy them from Dan.  But that is when all the reverb started.  As for piano sounds - wow is that a topic for another thread.  I have a long time professional music background including some years with a major Symphonic orchestra.  I have heard just about every kind of piano known to man - many performers would play only their own pianos and brought them with them.  In my experience NONE of them sounded the same - so who is to say what a good piano sound is or for that matter a clarinet or trumpet sound?   If you are a very young player and have been brought up to believe a band is made up of guitars and drums  - well - you might have a different idea about sounds than say someone who has played next to world class players all their life.  Anyway,
I still have faith in Dan and in the long term he will come through for us.

Deane
#77
Although I appreciate the input the information being given is not much help in
trying to decide if replacing my SD2 unit with the SD1000 is worth doing.  I only use vArranger with a sound module and do not use VSTs or things like that.  As for as sounds being "hasbeen" that is a good thing for what I do.  One of my complaints now about vArranger is Dan has taken the sounds to far to the modern feel to fit the music I play at gigs.  I need good sound sources that will be good to use for music from the 1920s- the early 1960s.  I gig 5-7 times each week at very well to do retirement homes for people whose average age is above 70.  When I first installed vArranger the styles and sounds were just about perfect for what I needed.  As Dan made upgrades the sounds became much more "in your face" with a lot of effects in place.  Unfortunately, my clients don't like that kind of music or sound.  Anyway, I am trying to find a way to salvage my investment in vArranger and still be able to use it for my gigs.

Deane

The vArranger² Software Forum / Question for Dan
November 23, 2016, 10:12:51 PM
I gig multiple times weekly and have always had a "backup plan" in place should my main keyboard decide not to work during a live gig.  With vArranger I use a Ketron SD2 sound module.  I have also been experimenting with your synth system and found it to be very good.  My question is:  How do I setup vArranger using the synth instead of the SD2 and not destroy or ruin my gig setups with the SD2?

Basically what I have found is after I experimented with the synth and then went back to use the SD2 there were song setups in which the RH voices had been replaced or were missing.   Is there a way to avoid this?

Thanks,

When I use my SD2 unit and select a song the proper PDF leadsheet shows and takes up about 1/3 of the screen but it can be resized if needed.  However, if I use the virtual sounds the same PDF shows up a a whole screen image and it can not be resized or reduced.  Is this a known issue or is there a setting somewhere I missed?

Here are two examples.
All of me is not to bad but Blue Hawaii is not good
I need all the PDF files I use on vArrange to be pretty big.
I know I can resize them on the screen but that distorts the
printed image.  I'm not sure how to get this done within
Adobe.

I have thousands of PDF Leadsheets.  All will display on vArranger but not all display great. So, is there a certain size PDF that displays the best?

Thanks folks for the input.  I don't know what I will do yet.  Some people think Dan will come up with a synth making a sound module unneeded.  I'll probably wait and see.

Wow! Does no one have any thoughts or experience about this?

Hi Bernie,
I'm in the same boat.  Right now my wife goes with me to all my gigs and helps me setup so a heavier keyboard works.  But, if I have to go alone the heavier keyboard would be a real struggle now.  My Spine surgery has been a total success, but the doctors don't want me lifting anything heavy.  I would use my Korg Microarranger but it crapped out on me and was very expensive to fix.  By the way, it was a real winner for gigs.  So, that puts me back to vArranger which I have gigged with and it was well accepted by my audiences.  It would be really neat not to have to deal with a sound module and the midi cable.  I bought a new Macbook Pro this week and am thinking about putting windows on it and running vArranger on it.  I did this with my older Macbook Pro and it was a total winner.  Anyway, we will see what Dan comes up with.

Hi Bernie,
Since I have had my Ketron SD7 I have also spent more time with vArranger and almost no time at all with
my Tyros 4.  I am about to sell my Tyros 4 and use the SD7 or vArranger for gigs.  I suspect Dan will come up
with a great solution for the synth sound issue-he always seems to know what we need.

I also have thought about buying a SD1000 to replace my SD2 but don't know if that will get me what I am wanting which is a better sound quality for styles other than Ketron.   Perhaps Dan will jump in here and tell us if anything is
on the horizon.

Deane

Bernie,
I had the same experience. Hoped Dan would provide the solution.

I currently use the SD2 module with vArranger and need some advice about other sound modules that can be used with vArranger.  I don't know anything about VSTs but am willing to learn.  Also, I am open to other hardware module options but don't know what is out there to research.  Any advice is welcome and appreciated.

Thanks,

There are nearly 20 youtube videos of the SD1000 Sounds - great find.
One question for the group.  Has anyone changed from the SD2 to the SD1000?  If yes, did you see an overall improvement in sound quality with styles as well as just the sounds?

Thanks Backus,
I am thinking of upgrading my vArranger system.  I currently don't use VSTs but do use the Ketron SD2 module.  My PC laptop now has 8 gigs of RAM.  It would be great if there were comparison videos or even MP3s comparing the SD2 and the SD1000 modules in use with vArranger.

Thanks,

I also am a Mac Book Pro owner and have run vArranger on my MacBook Pro.  I installed Windows on the MacBook Pro and everything on vArranger ran perfectly and in fact, better than on my PC laptop.  I was running Windows 7 in a dual boot setup on the Macbook Pro.

Just installed Windows 8.1 on my MacBook Pro.  vArranger runs fine but it does not see any Midi in or Midi out.
Where is there a Midi driver for Windows 8.1?

NOTE:   All I had to do was to reload the driver for my Roland A800 Pro controller and it now works just fine.

Still working on getting all the sounds right.

Dan,
If I buy the SC1000 I will own both SD2 and SD1000.
Can both be used at the same time and how would you do that?

Deane

Bernie,
I use a Roland Pro midi controller. Easy to setup, 61 keys, 10 pounds or so, and works perfectly.  About $300.00.

Thanks Dan,
I am about ready to give it a try.  I played 3 2-Hour gigs yesterday and have been sleeping most of today.
I'll report back here later tonight.

Hi Dan,
Korg styles are configured in "Sets" or "Banks".  What is the correct procedure for using the Korg styles with vArranger?

Thanks,

Hi Dan,
Please send the update to me.

Hi Dan,
it works really great!   I have been playing Tyros 4 styles.  One more question.
What is the correct procedure for installing your new updates without destroying
the control setup such as variation change.

Deane
#124
Dan,
Can you provide  a more detailed "How To" for connecting everything together without using the SD2 Unit?

Right now I have my PC Laptop connected to my Roland A-Pro 800 controller and have headsets connected to my PC Laptop.  When I start a style playing all I get is some very weird background noise.  What styles should I select to give it a try?

Thanks,
Deane
#125
Thank you Dan,
Deane
#126
Dan,
How does that work?   I thought you had to use the SD2 unit to get the sounds from vArranger.
Can you explain the process?

Thanks,
Deane
#127
Bernie,
I use a Roland A-800 Pro 61 key controller and can give it top marks.  Not the least expensive - but worth the price.

Deane
#128
That would be really neat.  I noticed in looking at the Sound folder it contains only one file with a SND extention.   What extentions are
currently supported by vArranger for sounds?

Deane
#129
Dan,
did you have time to download the files and take a look at the voices?  It would be neat if we could build up a set of very serious
voices vArranger could make use of. Perhaps a few others here would like to join in on a project.

Deane
#130
Here are thousands of voices to try with vArranger.
Deane
#131
I have a collection of over 4000 voices from various keyboards.   How do I load these to see if they will work?

Deane
#132
Tuggen,
I use Ketron's SD2 Unit.  I also tried Roland's BK-7M which did work but did not produce nearly the sound quality of the SD2 unit.

Deane
#133
Oops, sorry.  Didn't want to take up server space.
Deane
#134
SUCCESS!!!!  Thanks Dan for the very quick response to my questions.
The general setup is very easy using Roland's Editor.  The problem with the sliders
was created because they needed to be on a different Midi Chan rather than Chan 1.
The Buttons are not all assigned to Midi Chan 1 and the Sliders to Midi Chan 2 and it works
perfectly.

Deane
#135
Absolutely, another 6 months and it will be worth half what I got for it.

I just finished packing up my Tyros 4 - ready to be shipped to it's new owner.
I'll be using vArranger and my S950 for gigs now.

The vArranger² Software Forum / Dan is the Man!!!

Thanks to Dan and his on-going determination to help all his vArranger users I now have a fully working control map for my Roland A-800 Pro controller once again.   I had somehow deleted the control map Dan had gone online and created for me and was determined to learn how to do it myself.   After 3 days of failure I finally asked Dan for help and within minutes I had a set of written directions which allowed me to setup the control map in about 10 minutes and learn how it is done.

Thanks Dan - no wonder your customers are so loyal to you and your product.

Deane

Yep, just like you said.  just tried them out and they play great.

I will check them.  I don't know why I didn't figure that out.

Notice in the pictures I have loaded the CVP 409 folder which includes all the styles from the CVP 409 organized within sub-folders.   The second picture shows that even though the CVP409 folder has been selected nothing appears in the column on the far left.

Deane
#142
Dan,
I loaded a single folder with several sub-folders in it.  No matter what I do vArranger will not "see" the sub-folders.  I can go through the load function and find the sub-folders and load individual styles but that is the only way I can get the them.

Oh yes,  there is a (-) sign in front of the main folder in the list - but the sub-folders do not show up.

Did you try the set I sent you?

Deane
#143
I'll give that a try today too.
Thanks,
Deane
#144
Dan,
I have a request for future upgrades.  Unless I am missing something it is now not possible to have single folder in which other folders exist and see the sub-folders on vArranger.    Example:   I want a folder named "Current Songs"  inside that folder I want the songs organized alphabetically group like all the A songs in it's own folder, all the B songs in their own folder.

Right now when I setup folders like this vArranger will not "see" the sub-folders.
I attached a sample folder.

Let me know if I am missing something here or if what I see is correct.

Thanks,
Deane
#145
Dan,
I'am like Bernie, the styles are pretty good but the OS is really hard to deal with.
Adding Korg styles to vArranger would be an outstanding addition in my opinion.

Hi Mark,
I have been using vArranger now for well over a year.  I use it on gigs and it works really great.
Dan does not provide a demo for various reasons.  Those of us who own vArranger have all been
very pleased with the program and Dan provides free upgrades to it on a regular basis based a lot on
what is asked for on this forum.  It will do just what Dan says it does and plays Ketron, Yamaha, and
Roland styles.  I use mine with a Ketron SD2 module(recommended setup) and a Roland A-800 Pro controller - works great.

Mlaky,
I have been using Varranger for nearly 2 years now.  I have no regrets about buying it from Dan.  The software is constantly being improved and Dan pays a lot of attention to his users and makes changes we ask for - all for free.

Dan is an upright guy and all of us who own vArranger have been pleased with how it performs and it's ease of use.

Hope this helps.

Nice stuff Dan.  Fun to see what others are doing with vArranger.
I am still pretty much in the "down" mode - not playing much right now.
Progress has been slow but steady.
