I dont understand how do we link a CD/audio file with a free midi track in Varranger and how do we sync this?
jon
#2
If you stop midi file before end of song the controllers and not reseting or are staying in the Sd100 memeory .
Does the VArranger panic button not clear any out of tune pitch wheels etc.

Do you mean you have to work to understand more about SD1000 or are ketron asking you for more info about the bugs you are descovering.
jon

Dan,
Have ketron contacted you or made any fixes for the SD1000 bugs you informed them about several months ago?

I think that is the STYLE that needs to play back your song chords in that way.

Are you visiting Ketron. lol

You are right .
I always convert my midi with lyrics to kar bacause I use cakewalk for editing the patches, notes and events, etc.
When doing this Cakewalk messes up the (line by line/created by GN Midi) lyrics unless the files are in kar format.
If I have 20 midi in a folder and want to see how many I have without lyrics added I could tell an a glance how many still need the lyrics syncronising because they will not be kar files. However I can continue to can look outwith VA inside the folder and see the file extensions if you do not see it worthwhile.

16 is the track number not the controller number  ?
jon

can we have different colours in the corner of the box to show the different mid/kar files.
As song titles more than three words make it difficult to see the small box in the corner showing the mod/kar files .
At present both are dark yellow colour.

Is the SD1000 not powered by USB rather than direct from mains supply?
jon

what is the controller number
#20
I cant see this in the list because you never gave us the controller number to help.
AnywayI think it would be to mute the melody when a midi is playing.
jon
#21
Gerard, Are you saying you cannot use the new usb output of the SD1000 and have to use the old analogue 5 pin THRU midi connections to make your vocalizer  transpose vocal harmony work.
Does this mean that the  USB midi is processing digital midi messages that are different to standard 5 pin midi.

The choir voices are really good.
Low voices are male and higher are female on some of the sounds.
Others choir voices sound the same as SD2.

Yes I guess the drums will be slighhty better but the work involved in re-ballancing all other tracks as well as the individual drum parts (kick, snare, hihat, cymbal etc) puts me off making the change over. It took me 2-3 years tweeking to get to where I am.
I have 2 x SD2 (one is a backup and rotate their use over every 4 months).
If I had to change due to faulty equipment etc then I would probably buy the latest SD1000 bacause I had to.
But hopefully Ill be fine for a 'wee while as we say in Scotland.
jon
#26
Pax-eterna etc
I agree with you regarding the apparent minor tweeks in the sounds of Sd1000. I like the USB power idea.
Ketron SD2, Midjay etc already have great sounds so it would be a challenge to get better much better?
However I think we needed better strings, guitars, organs, brass, bass and drums. The SD2 are however already to a professional standard.
The SD1000 may have made better sounds if they are listened to individually.
But I think most of us will be playing about 7 sounds at one time to play a auto accompanyment style or 10 to 16 sounds to play a midi file.
When all are playing together the audience would probably be none the wiser of any differences between the various ketron sound modules.
One thing I really miss in the SD2 is human voices that change their singing words with different notes played.  (3-4 words are used)
I think SD1000D has the human voicees  but I would not pay the price only to have these.
Also the big problem as Dan says is the SD1000 nstruments have different volumes compared to SD2 etc. so all of my 4000 midi files would need their volumes re-ballanced. This is time consuming and very difficult. What sounds right in the house is always different in a venue.
I have been tweeking my midi files for over 2 years to get them to sound nearly perfect to my ear for my needs.
I estimate I would need to spend 5 hours 3 nights a week for several months to re-ballance all my midi files to sound right with the SD1000.
Probably SD1000 reverb levels will need tweeking as well as some sysex messages to all my midi files.
I will be thinking seirously about this as it is a big task. Also my mouse arm would probably would never recover from the stress of this physical strain.

jon

Dan, Perhaps you could use existing vArranger "SONG CHORD" charts function to export the existing chords to a new line (of chord symbols) above the lyrics display.
What do you think?
jon
#33
Angel You can do it without an ins file.
The ins file just tells you the instrument names unique to ketron.
I just remember that a GM SAX is a ketron SOPRANO SAX etc. as I generally only use about 20 different ketron instruments you start to remember what they are.
Maybe you can let me know if there are any other advantages I might be missing with a ins file installed?

Dan,
You say SD1000 is also USB powered.
If power from mains supply is it still a 9V mains plug they supply like Sd2.
Are volumes od instruments different that we will need to re-ballance all styles and midi files for Sd1000.
Are reverb types much different  and the sysex codes different for SD1000 reverb types.

I think we should give ketron reasonable time to reply to Dan.
Then if they dont play fair we could try some tactics.
We dont want to get their back up against us.
I dont think their management skills are like most other companies.

For you to sell SD1000 you would need to be the sole importer in France I think.
Also WEEE waste ..... etc

The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE Directive) is the European Community directive 2002/96/EC on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) which, together with the RoHS Directive 2002/95/EC, became European Law in February 2003. The WEEE Directive set collection, recycling and recovery targets for all types of electrical goods, with a minimum rate of 4 kilograms per head of population per annum recovered for recycling by 2009. The RoHS Directive set restrictions upon European manufacturers as to the material content of new electronic equipment placed on the market.

The symbol adopted by the European Council to represent waste electrical and electronic equipment comprised a crossed out wheelie bin with or without a single black line underneath the symbol. The black line indicates that goods have been placed on the market after 2005, when the Directive came into force.[1] Goods without the black line were manufactured between 2002 and 2005. In such instances, these are treated as "historic weee" and falls outside

I wish Ketron had the common sense to send the SD1000 to you for testing before this.
We like Ketron but they are silly and have stupid ways to deal with things.
They give themselves unecessary trouble and bad name which could easily be avoided.
They should have sent out 10xSD1000 demos to people like you who are reputable to test this first.
I bet it takes many months for them to fix bugs and make new software SD1000 versions now.

so all volume ballancing will need to be re-done for our saved styles and midi files etc.
Thats a big editing job.
Hopefully any bass I have at volume 100 for SD2 can all be set to say vol 90? for SD1000 etc.
what about reverb CC#91 as I always found it was needing to be set high on SD2.

If default is 32 they do not suggest the above and below the default values? Im i missing something?

The Sd1000- F0 26 7B 00 00 vv F7 SYSEX for reverb types seems to be the same as old SD2 - F0 26 7B 00 00 06 F7
What VV? do we insert for Hall 2 (14H)
I think it would be 14 but the Sd1000 manual says values 0-7...not 14?

I use two different varranger .ini set ups as you advised me last year.
As xuanvus says it is annoying needing change/rename the varranger .ini folders to select the set up needed at different gig with different gear.

Chico,
I agree what you say and that reading lyrics from a monitor etc. does not look as good as from memory . But I am also confused.
Are you using vArranger or other equipment to play sequences/auto accompanyment for jazz music but not wanting the audience to know.
You say they will know if they see your computer etc. But you are still going to do it anyway.
So it must be good enough if you can fool them without them seeing your laptop etc?
jon
#67
Jose
I do not think people care if you use a computer as long as the songs and sound is good.
Many top singers sing only to Karaoke CGD files without playing any instruments or having any musical ability.
They are getting the best work because people want the sound to be like the original artist.

Dan,
Can you explain how controllers are working.
In the controllers list it shows the Midi in Port.
Is this the actual input of the USB on the computer and what if I use a different USB input next time
How does that effect the controllers if they look for port/USB input previously used/saved? .
When you select "My Songs" folder is there a keyboard controller to scroll up and down (one at a time) the files (on the left ) inside that folder.
114/115 is page by page

My Nanokontroller has been loosing its midi imput connection with vArranger every few minutes recently.
I think the USB plug was slightly loose or metal stretched with constant use over the last 2 years.
I slightly squeezed the USB plug to make the metal closer tighter fit into the laptop and it appears tio have helped.

Due to the period of crisis, keton reduced its working group too, so , there was not the possibility to publish video or other material directly from the fair.
Some recordings were made, I think you will able to see this videos on the ketron web site in the coming days.
I was at the fair and I can tell you this:
I had a good feeling, so many people came to see the ketron product.

Gp1 has a great sound, you can hear the resonance of the strings and all the nuances of a large acoustic piano.
SD1000 has a great sound and wave table seems very complete and convincing.
Midjpro now includes a professional style section.
Ketron's team is working to create new style to be included in midjpro.
Good is the new usb-card reader, with this new module, you can update old instruments like sd1, x1, etc. ..

For all other matters, remember: this is my personal blog, it is not the ketron blog.

you say the Midjay pro will have real audio slices for drums and percussions.
Maybe with the SD1000 it is not possible to have real audio slices as the module is driven by an external device like computer laptop etc.
The Midjay pro is a standalone unit with its own os and software etc allowing access to those slices.

I think any pattern for any manufacturer can be written up to 32 bars but it is just that the manufacturers do no do it.
Probably because of time needed in programming/writing etc.

This may be a useful tool for hearing chords. You do not need to download anything simply use on line.
http://www.randomchord.com
Welcome to the RandomChord.com Chord Generator

A useful resource for all musicians — improvisers can make sure they can play over any harmony; songwriters can find that elusive lost chord to complete their chord progression.

Each chord comes with its own looped backing track and an explanation of the scale choices that fit with it.

Choose a chord from the drop down menus and click 'Go', or click 'Random' to have a random chord generated for you.

SD1000 has USB also and I think two sound generator chips for 32 midi channels.
This unit may be expensive for what we get but it will probably be 1/6th cost of a full midi Audya workstation.
It is also probably the in top 3 sound modules available in the world.

I like the human voices.
Really wanted the human voices sounds for about 2 years now
So do we expect the cost of SD1000 to be approx. double the price of the SD2?

Dan suggested same as I suggested, that you try the LIVE DRUM BANKS instruments in track 9 till you hear the right sound then save.
I dont really follow what you are talking about with AUDIO loops. I thought all loops in styles and pats. are midi loops with Ketron.
I think newer Audya and Tyros use audio loops but not earlier ketron or vArranger in patterns and styles loops??
Hope you can fix your crash problem. Maybe a firmware update will help this but Dan knows more about this stuff??

I never replied as I was buzy making nusic all week. Now I am on a weekend break (first in months) so I have no Ketron/SD2 to test your patterns.
However from experence I usually select the precussion drums track (so its colour is red)  and audition all the available prec. live drum sets and standard drum sets until i hear one that plays the way I think  it should then save the pattern/style in varranger for future use.
I do not see a merengue gtr in the guitat lists but again try all the gtrs till it soulds righy and save the style.
If this is does not help it may be thet the drums need some re-mapping within v arrranger which needs some re-programming by Dan?

Dan,
If we are using midi files with lyrics and need to learn/practice/rehearse the phrasing of singing/playing, we need to hear the areas/bars that are difficult to play/sing many times in a loop.  from eg bars 8 to 12, 18 to 20, 65 to 72 etc.
We could make markers but this would take a lot of time and would not be needed after the song is mastered. Also you would not know in advance where there are difficult parts to learn for intense practice.
Also we may need many markers for many different parts but there is a limit of 16 markers. Also markers do not run in loops.
The small bar counter does not accurately replay from precise bar numbers and is difficult to click on the bar required for repetative playing from same part.
Suggestion- If we were using the small bar counter withan new option of left click to display start and end bar measure numbers and also have a loop on/off option we could practice accurate bar numbers to midi files that way.

I have the Musictech MT 60
You can configure as follows..............
HOW TO SET UP THE MT 60 CHROMATIC KEYBOARD
This MT 60 Chromatic Keyboard has very sensitive independent dynamic control on both Right and
Left Hands. The keyboards can be set up in several different configurations for both the Right and
Left hands as follows.
RIGHT HAND KEYBOARD (Chromatic) - MIDI TRANSMISSION on Channels 1 and 4
C Griff: C in first row
B Griff: C in second row
C in third row
LEFT HAND KEYBOARD (Bass and Chords)
- CHORDS MIDI TRANSMISSION on Channels 2 and 1 (can be added)
- BASS MIDI TRANSMISSION on Channel 3
In International, Belgian, Dutch or French system.
PRIMARY SWITCHING "ON" STAGES
The keyboard system programming stages are accessed when switching the instrument "On".
To enter the setup mode of the keyboard, two buttons are used:
- one on the chromatic Right Hand keyboard (button 1) - see Fig. 1.
- one on the Bass and Chords Left Hand keyboard (button 2) - see Fig. 2.
Hold these buttons down (shown by the arrows) while switching the instrument "On".
N.B. - Decide what setup you want for both Right and Left keyboards before beginning the
procedure below, because the useful time for each operation is just 3 seconds from when the first
two buttons are released.
The instrument, will confirm the programming done by sounding a note.
PROGRAMMING THE SYSTEM FOR THE RIGHT HAND KEYBOARD
After the primary switching "On" stages described in the previous paragraph, select the system
required by referring to Fig. 1 and following the instructions below.
To select C Griff (C in first row): press button A on Rt. Hand Keyboard.
To select B Griff (C in second row): press button B on Rt. Hand Keyboard.
(C in third row): press button C on Rt. Hand Keyboard.
RIGHT HAND DYNAMICS - The button dynamics on the Right Hand keyboard can be selected in
"On" or "Off" by referring to Fig. 1 and proceeding as follows:
Right Hand Dynamics active - press button D (Right Hand keyboard - chromatic).
Right Hand Dynamics not active - press button E (Right Hand keyboard - chromatic).
HOW TO SELECT THE OCTAVE OF THE NOTES ON THE RIGHT HAND (FOR ALL SYSTEMS)
The octave for the notes of the Right Hand keyboard can be set to a maximum of +/- 2 octaves by
pressing specific buttons listed below:
For Midi Channel 1:
Press button N on the keyboard (see Fig. 1 above) to lower the notes by 1 octave at a time.
Press button O on the keyboard to raise the notes by 1 octave at a time.
For Midi Channel 4:
Press button P on the keyboard (see Fig. 1 above) to lower the notes by 1 octave at a time.
Press button Q on the keyboard to raise the notes by 1 octave at a time.
PROGRAMMING THE SYSTEM FOR THE LEFT HAND KEYBOARD
The method used for the selection of the Left Hand keyboard system is similar to that of the Right Hand.
After the primary switching "On" stages described on the previous page and following any other
programming if this was necessary, select the system required on the Left Hand keyboard by referring
to Fig. 2 and following the instructions below.
Remember that all settings, in any of the sections below, must be made within 3 secs of the previous
one, therefore it may be necessary to restart the instrument, repeating the primary switching "On"
stages, if this time is exceeded.
TO SELECT:
International System (2 rows of Bass and 4 rows of Chords): Press button F on Left Hand keyboard.
Belgian System: Press button G on Left Hand keyboard.
Dutch System: - button H on Left Hand keyboard.
French System: - button I on Left Hand keyboard.
The Left Hand keyboard will now have been programmed for the system selected.
LEFT HAND DYNAMICS - The button dynamics on the Left Hand keyboard can be selected in "On"
or "Off" as follows:
Left Hand Dynamics active - press button L (Left Hand keyboard - Bass and Chords).
Left Hand Dynamics not active - press button M (Left Hand keyboard - Bass and Chords).
HOW TO SELECT THE OCTAVE OF THE CHORDS ON THE LEFT HAND (FOR ALL SYSTEMS)
The octave for the chords of the Left Hand keyboard can be set to a maximum of +/- 2 octaves by
pressing specific buttons listed below:
For Midi Channel 2:
Press button R on the keyboard (see Fig. 2 above) to lower the notes by 1 octave at a time.
Press button S on the keyboard to raise the notes by 1 octave at a time.
For Midi Channel 1:
Press button T on the keyboard (see Fig. 2 above) to lower the notes by 1 octave at a time.
Press button U on the keyboard to raise the notes by 1 octave at a time.
ON/OFF FOR ADDITIONAL CHORDS TRANSMISSION ON MIDI CHANNEL 1
The chords transmit on Midi channel 2 by default but the instrument provides for the addition of
Midi transmission on channel 1 also. This function allows a second sound to be controlled from the
chords section (a string backing for example).
To activate/deactivate Midi channel 1, do as follows:
1. Press the first button F (see Fig. 1 above) in the first row on the Left Hand Keyboard;
2. Press the second button G in the same row, while keeping the first button pressed;
3. Press the third button H in the same row, while keeping the first and second buttons pressed;
4. A Led will indicate that Midi Channel 1 activated (LED ON) or deactivated (LED OFF

I could not live without vArranger. lol
Using a laptop rather than an external standalone arranger (previously Solton MS40 then Ketron SD3)
is never going to be outdated or superceeded.
You will always updaye and upgrade vArranger with new features and ideas that are needed.
what more can we ask?

the blow up list is also a good idea when you need to see more or everything in same folder for if you are not sure exactly what you want to play next or you need to be flexible in some way.
A playlist is good when you are able to stick to the pre-planned program order.
But as we know its difficult to know what, when and how a audience are going to react to certain songs, rhythms and gendres etc.
jon

you probably already have a laptop.
vArranger is more flexible and you can have back up if breakdown . You cannot afford to have 2xKorg for backup.
jon

I look forward to that
WHEN?
Pre -prepared playlists are also good and I will look forward to use this but sometimes we need to be more flexible and change our minds on mext song because of dancers/crows reactions etc.
Is there flexibility in new playlist feature that you are making.
jon
#119
Dan
For live playing I think it would be good if the users could have some flexibility in the layout and size of boxes and text for some information to help users aged over 40 whose eyes commonly start to have difficulty in reading. Also for us to be able to see more information at one time rather than scroll through as many pages when looking at list of midi/karaoke files and patches/sounds etc. It is usefull to view more playlist files at one time to see a larger list for faster and more overview.
My interest is mainly for midi file/karaoke use but this suggestion could also be applied to other functions to help others for their specific needs and uses. I suggest (as example) that I need to see more midi files names currently displayed from top to bottom in the top left side.
At present we can only see 10 at one time but if you are playing and need to choose the next song (or unexpectedly a third song etc. to keep dancers on floor) scrolling through the pages within same folder is difficult at same time as playing/singing.
When playing midi files/karaole the areas with "My Sounds" and "Voice" are not really needed. I suggest that we can drag, move or open the midi files list to overlay the "My Sounds" and "Voice" which are unused areas during midi file playing. You would then be able to see 40 midi files at one look. Also with an option to stretch the size of the dragged/overlayed folders to make them larger and easier to read. So you could stretch the folder sizes over "My Sounds" and "Voice" and see 20 double size midi file folders (or 40 at current size).  Im sure you know how this is applied in other projects witha small symbol in the corner providing a drop down menu of various options (drag and font size etc. ). I think stretching the files area and the boxes "fitting to size" would be good. Allowing users to have some control of the layout to suit their needs would be more flexible.
I would also like the midi file counter measure bar to be able to be expanded and showing the remaining total measures in the midi file as well as the measure actually in play. In live playing it is useful to have an idea of remaining midi file play time measures to decide whether to cut a song short or let it finish itself if not many dancers are on the floor etc.  What do you think Dan.

I am happy with the present arrangement of folders to store styles and midi files.
But I have recently had to vary my style of music and venues to widen my musical horizons as work is getting harder to find with financial cut backs at many current venues that I play.
Anyway I have been finding that the need for pre-prepared MIDI FILE/SONG CHORD playlists would also be a useful feature in vArranger.
The playlists would need to be able to be arranged in actual playing (set list) order and not alphabetically.
This way similar midi file rhythms/beat/gendre/tempos etc could be chained together in a pre determined playlist order.
To make a playlist in non alphabetical order would need to be without adding a number before the song mane (as at present) as this would also affect the current song folders lists which are still needed and I find a great and accurate system.
We would also need auto-play option (on/off) between songs and shuffle feature in playlists.
Maybe playlist folders could be in the "My Songs" folder area indicated by red coloured folders.

I play for ballroom/latin and sequence dancing 3-4 times a week often to the same dancers who attend all dances.
(Some of these dancers also go to other dances every day).
This requires many hundreds/thousands of songs. Normally a 5 minute dance will need 6  songs because I make things hard for myself by not repeating a standard 32 bar song and making medleys of 3x32 bar songs with 3 different songs in same medley. Then on the second dance another 3x32 bar medley.
In a 2 hour gig I will go through about 120 songs this way. Now my repertoire is over 3000 songs.
There is no way my memory will remember all the chords to play on my left hand to this amount of songs so this is where I export the vArranger "song chords" into a midi file, add additional custom accompanyments tracks etc Then play the melody or singing accompany to them with karaoke lyrics added. This year I have been learning /making song chords for about 6 songs a week = about 200 this year so far.
So for me 6 songs a week becomes too much to remember so I use VA song chords midi file export feature.
Thanks for this Dan . But now you give me more work because I like the new markers function, but I need to add them to me existing old files.
I already only sleep 4-5 hours.

I like your recent addition of the midi file markers feature.
Is there any possibility that these can also be added during the composing of the song chords function.
So when we make song chords we can add a marker that can then be exported into a midi file.
ie
If we are making song chords to export them into midi files function and we also want a markers function it will be much easier adding them into the required song chord bar numbers before the song chord is exported into a midi file.
Then the midi file can be opened with markers already in place?

The vArranger² Software Forum / SD2 reverb level
August 13, 2012, 09:36:30 PM
Be aware of the SD2 reverb levels.
Listening with earphones or with a small PA in your house the SD2 reverb seems too much or more than needed .
But when in a live public situation - large hall, club of bar etc I can hardly hear the same reverb levels.
eg . On the lead melody track - I have this set to Arena with maximum reverb level and could still ask for more if it were possible.
The reverb is hardly noticeable yet with earphones the reverb would be ok about half the level.

How are you trying to open the roland styles.
You should be using varranger to open them initially through the VArranger LOAD procedure.
Roland styles are nothing to do with Microsoft  Windows  applications.

A good solution.
This again shows the brilliant and ongoing versatility of vArranger.
However you got me thinking if I could avoid the renaming.
Rather than the slight effort of renaming the "ini" files for different set ups - here is a suggestion.
If I created two new FOLDERS (not files) within the vArrangerdata folder and as you suggested I will name one FOLDER "vArranger2-ACC.ini" and the other FOLDER "vArranger2-KEYB.ini".
In each folder I would have the relevant version of the same name "ini" file for each controllers set up option.
I would then simply drag the ini file out of the relevant ini folders into the vArranger data folder as needed for each set up.
So all that I will need to do is drag the "ini" file as needed depending on my set up for that gig.
I am aware that having two "ini" files with the same name will require greater care to avoid confusion.
Jon

#146
What is the best way to have two different instances/scenes of controllers set up.
Ie. I have Two different kontroller units but need same controlls over VA.
Depending on the gig I will use one or the other controller units. (not both together)
Ie. for set up scene  ONE = NanoKontroller with midi accordion.
alternative
Set up TWO = Roland midi controller keyboard with accordion.

Dan
I need the song chord transpose feature to work for part of a song.
At present  it is only possible to transpose by +/- 1 per time.
At present you cannot select eg  bars 91-119 to transpose by + 3.
You can repeat the process but the selected bars (eg 91-119) do not remain selected to repeat the process.
In a song chord with 190 bars (medley) this is frustrating process re-selecting.

Also slightly frustrating is re-sizing the song chord view changes the bar positions back to the bar 1 at the beginning.

jon

Maybe I also dont understand but.
I dont really think the your footpedals sends sysex messages.
They send small power/current changes to make a switsh open/closed for fills?
I think you need anothe rUSB pedal device for fills.
Analogue to USB conversion pedals are discussed in another thread in this forum group.

GNMidi software has a simple way of inserting lyrics line by line .
I usually make each line 4-6 words long.
You syncronise each line of text to the song tempo by simply pressing the PC spacebar each time a new line of text is to be displayed during the song play. This GNMidi procedure is then saved and vArranger will then display syncronised text in when the saved midi file is played.
The midi file could simply consist of accompanyment chords with relevant song text which is same as a vArranger "song chords".
