Title: Roland Sound Canvas VST
Post by: BjayG on December 24, 2015, 11:21:29 AM
Hi,

I have just noticed that Roland have released their Sound Canvas plugin as a VST.  There is apparently a demo available - so it might be useful as a sound source for VA.   It costs 115 Euros - so not outrageously expensive if it does the job.

See:  http://www.roland.com/products/sound_canvas_va/

Seasons greeting to everyone.

Barry

I think you make a better choice if you buy a vArranger soundbank.

With all the respect for vArranger's soundbanks, but in comparison to a PROFESSIONAL product like Sound Canvas VA, the comparison does not even do it.
:D
Well, it would be interesting if vArranger offered better support (full sounds patch list) for this module, so vArranger is already compatible with Roland's styles. What do you think about, Dan?

DjTony.

I am sorry to say, but I think Roland VST is junk. I have tried both versions, the one for PC as VST and one they released for ipad/iphone.
Sounds are very dull and outdated. They resampled old stuff. Yes, you get few good kicks out of it, but overall there are much better banks out there.

Just an opinion of somebody who actually tried it :)

I agree in part ..

Roland has historically been not a recognized music company for irresistible sounds, but (at least in Italy) their keyboards is very much used in live-set as pianobar (used with midifile and styles). Obviously, Roland has no interest in making the SC-VA playing sounds perfectily for only 115 euros, otherwise it would not sell hardware such as synth keyboard, arranger and sound modules. Know, meanwhile, that the SC-VA will have more and more interesting features than the synth of vA2, which in turn is a surrogate. Making vA2 more compatible with SC-VA at least as far as patch sounds would not be a bad idea..An example, if i play an original Roland style as BK-7m styles, there's a lot o sounds in sounds bank as 53 (CC0) wich SC-VA don't understand. Dan, give you the word ..

If you want to save the money for the VST, I have a professionally sampled Roland  SC sound font that I use with VArranger. I downloaded it somewhere I don´t remember and have been using it since with VArranger without any major problems. I like it, and the BK-7m rhythms really sound great with it. It is very easy on RAM and system requirements. It complements the built in synth very nicely. Actually, it replaces it for the most part but for some voices.

I've collected a lot of Soundfonts, Roland surrogated too. But, if we want to speak "PRO", a professional VSTi as Virtual Sound Canvas is better..

True, a VST should always be top notch, but for the semi-professional or musician at home, soundfonts are a great starting point.

Yes it's a really good demo but give a vA soundbank to the same musicians and you have the same result, perhaps with a better largest sound. (but SC have a best routing for effects, that's right)

Replicating the sounds of a VSTi in a soundfont for those with competence is not complicated at all. I also created a soundfond with the sounds of my old GEM WX2 with a good result. The difference is the DSP Effects of a VSTi, which transforms completely a poor guitar sound in a powerful Stratocaster..For this I asked Dan to develop support for this module VSTi..

PS the Sound Canvas VA costs 115 euros .. for those interested ..

Yes but the samples of the vA soundbank is not create from a Sound Canvas but from newers keyboards. And if you are a little bit clever you can use the three send effect with good vst and you can expand the sound.  :)

Dear Lylo, why waste time setting up three VSTs when I can select them directly from the VSC sound generator with a couple of CC and Sysex parameters? Smarter than that ..

Exemple with a midifile in vArranger with Independence fx (reverb, chorus, delay) and BK7M soundbank (not the best soundbank for vA I think) https://app.box.com/s/48tn81iy523752l1rxzl6nhyruxuvx5y
